My story is not overly complicated. But interesting nonetheless. I grew up in the middle part of South Carolina. Lugoff was a town of 2000 residents. DuPont opened a plant and created a middle class. My neighborhood was filled with ranch houses occupied by families with lots of children. Not hard to find friends.
Life was simple. But not boring. Black and white TV's with three channels. Phones with cords attached. Moms when they heard “mom, I'm bored” answered go outside and play.
My education was integrated. Wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Expectations in our school were modest. Graduate from high school and go to work.Except my parents. They highly valued education. Always expecting me to go to college. I heard repeatedly, you can be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it. What a wonderful creed. I went to Clemson University where I went through 5 majors before discovering an opportunity in civil engineering. I believe everyone should explore opportunities and find a place to make a difference. I did transition from high school to college. I guess not in today's terms but I went from being called Tommy to Tom. Never liked having a y at the end of my name.
I graduated and started in the corporate environment. Got married six months after entering the working world. Been married ever since. Happily. At 24 I decided I was ready to become self-employed. Cold turkey, quit a job with nothing more than a lousy business plan. I moved 1500 miles back home without a real understanding of how I could survive on my own. I should say how we could survive on our own. My wife, Cindy was along for the ride. An incredible one.
I look back after 35 years of being an owner of southeastern architectural systems and wonder how it all happened. There were moments of heartbreak. Many more providing exhilaration of success. My life is a series of stories. Lots of them primarily connected by relationships with great friends. Most human beings measure success by bank accounts. I use experiences and knowing other human beings to determine what is valuable.
Writing started after completing my participation in capitalism. Now my quest is to make other lives better. And inspire others to do the same. Can’t wait for our paths will to cross.
